Don’t suck the fun out!

So, this was Marc Prensky’s presentation. It was delighting, engaging, hillarious – and polarizing for sure.

Here are some of his ideas:

All games are educational! The truth ist that games produce learning with engagement. Many executives, doctors and lawyers attribute their success to playing games.

Games make better doctors – see Dr. James Rosser. Gamers make 37% fewer mistakes in surgery. So you know what to do: Next time before sugery ask the doctor “Do you play super monkey ball?”.
Gamers make better sports players and managers. Madden NFL for example teaches you how to have your own franchise.
Gamers make better workers -  they learn how to analyze new situations, solve pblems, take risks, be a hero etc
For examples have a look at www.socialimpactgames.com
So why is that so? Games let you role play an expert

Games are the most engaging intellectual stuff. Learning is the real reason people play games. Most game developer don’t want to hear about it. They say they are in the gaming company. But they really are in an education company. Educational games teach us how to cooperate, to make effective decision, to take prudent risks, to make ethical decisions, employ scientific deduction, understand environment
manage businesses…

There are three good news: There are lots of educational games. Our commercial games are becoming more educational. And more complex games are created. And there are more and more ways and incentives to create educational games. Supply is up. And demand is up, too.

Why do kinds want games? Because they are bored at school. Games are a language they know. This is what a student says: “You look at technology as a tool. We look at technology as a foundaytion. It is totally integrated in what we do.”

Supply is up, demand is up. Usage is not. That is our next challenge.

There are some barriers for games like educational establishment, money, time, knowledge, technology, security. Go around the barriers. It is easier to aks forgiveness than permission.
Don’t suck the fun out.

It is not about games. It is abut angagement. It is about 21st century learning. We have to engage with students.
Feel the fear and do it anyway. That is the definition of courage. I hope we have the courage.
